IMD issues six-day yellow alert for Odisha; thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rain likely
Bhubaneswar, July 9: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Warning (Be Aware) for several districts of Odisha, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty surface winds and isolated heavy rainfall from July 10 to July 15. The weather office has advised people to remain alert and take necessary precautions as unstable weather conditions are expected to prevail across different parts of the State.
According to the IMD, on July 10, Balasore and Bhadrak districts are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds reaching 40-50 kmph. Similar wind speeds are also expected over Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh, while thunderstorms with winds of 30-40 kmph are forecast for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
The warning will continue on July 11 for Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Boudh. Similar weather conditions are expected on July 12, mainly over Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
On July 13 and 14, thunderstorms and gusty winds are likely over several western and northern districts, including Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Balangir and Sonepur. Additionally, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj are likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall on July 14 and 15.
The IMD has advised residents to avoid open areas during thunderstorms, refrain from taking shelter under trees and secure loose objects. Farmers, travellers and those working outdoors have been urged to remain cautious and follow official weather advisories to minimise risks.
