Strong Earthquake Jolts Delhi-NCR, Tremors Trigger Panic Across North India

New Delhi, June 27: A powerful earthquake sent shockwaves across Delhi-NCR and several states in North India on Saturday, causing widespread panic as residents rushed out of homes, offices, schools, and commercial buildings in search of safety. The tremors, which lasted for several seconds, were felt across a vast region, including parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.

The sudden shaking caught people off guard, forcing many to evacuate high-rise apartments and office complexes. Residents reported feeling furniture, ceiling fans, and household objects shaking, while several office buildings temporarily halted operations to ensure the safety of employees. Crowds gathered in open spaces until authorities confirmed there was no immediate threat.

The earthquake also sparked a flurry of activity on social media, with people sharing videos of swaying buildings and describing their experiences. Many users reported receiving earthquake alerts on their mobile phones seconds before the tremors were felt, helping them react quickly.

According to officials, there were no immediate reports of fatalities or major structural damage. However, disaster management authorities and local administrations remained on high alert and began inspecting public buildings, residential complexes, bridges, and other critical infrastructure as a precautionary measure. Emergency response teams were kept ready to deal with any unforeseen situation.

Experts explained that Delhi-NCR falls under one of India's most seismically active zones, making it vulnerable to earthquakes originating in the Himalayan belt. Even earthquakes with epicentres located hundreds of kilometres away can produce noticeable tremors across the National Capital Region because of the geological characteristics of the area.

The National Centre for Seismology is analysing seismic data to determine the exact magnitude, epicentre, and depth of the earthquake. Officials said detailed findings would be released after the completion of scientific assessment. Authorities are also monitoring the possibility of aftershocks, although no significant secondary tremors had been reported immediately after the main event.

Disaster management experts urged citizens to remain calm and avoid believing or sharing rumours circulating on social media. They advised people to rely only on official information released by government agencies and emergency services. Residents were also reminded to follow earthquake safety guidelines, including taking cover under sturdy furniture during shaking, staying away from windows and glass structures, avoiding lifts, and moving to open areas only after the tremors have completely stopped.

The incident once again highlighted the importance of earthquake preparedness in urban centres with dense populations and high-rise buildings. Experts stressed the need for regular emergency drills, awareness programmes, and strict adherence to earthquake-resistant construction standards to minimise risks during future seismic events.

While the earthquake caused considerable panic among the public, authorities reassured citizens that the situation remained under control. Further updates regarding the earthquake's magnitude, epicentre, possible aftershocks, and any confirmed damage are expected after detailed assessments by the concerned agencies.
