Forest officials track tigress Zeenat and her cubs through advanced monitoring
Bhubaneswar, June 27: Forest officials have confirmed that tigress Zeenat and her four cubs have started moving together within the Similipal Tiger Reserve, marking a positive development for wildlife conservation efforts in Odisha.
The movement of the tigress and her cubs was verified through the reserve's extensive monitoring network. The Similipal Tiger Reserve authorities also shared the update on social media platform X, highlighting the healthy progress of the young cubs.
According to officials, the cubs are less than two months old and have recently begun accompanying their mother outside the den as part of their early developmental stage. This phase is considered crucial for learning survival skills, including movement, navigation and adapting to their natural habitat under the protection of the tigress.
To ensure continuous monitoring, wildlife authorities have deployed more than 20 camera traps across a 20-kilometre radius within the reserve. In addition to camera surveillance, tigress Zeenat is being tracked using a satellite collar and Very High Frequency (VHF) radio signals, enabling officials to monitor her movements and ensure the safety of both the mother and her cubs.
Forest officials said the advanced tracking system will help researchers study the family's behaviour while strengthening conservation measures. The successful movement of Zeenat and her cubs is being viewed as an encouraging sign for tiger conservation in Similipal Tiger Reserve.
