Low-pressure area forms over southwest Bay of Bengal
Bhubaneswar, May 11: A low-pressure area has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the north Sri Lanka coast under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Sri Lanka, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.
According to the IMD, the system developed around 5:30 am and is expected to become more marked during the next 48 hours. However, weather experts have clarified that there is currently no immediate threat to Odisha from the developing weather system.
Officials stated that the low-pressure area is located far away from the Odisha coast and is unlikely to have any significant impact on the state’s weather conditions at present. No cyclone or heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Odisha in connection with the system so far.
The IMD’s latest meteorological analysis also mentioned the presence of multiple upper air cyclonic circulations over West Madhya Pradesh, southeast Arabian Sea adjoining Lakshadweep, and West Rajasthan, influencing weather activity in different regions of the country.
Meteorologists said the exact movement and intensity of the low-pressure system would become clearer over the next two days as it gradually intensifies.
Meanwhile, authorities are closely monitoring the development over the Bay of Bengal. The IMD has assured that regular updates and advisories will be issued depending on the movement and future course of the system.
Weather experts have advised people not to panic, stating that there is no cause for concern for Odisha residents at this stage.
