Thunderstorm alert across Odisha till May 13: IMD issues yellow warnings
Bhubaneswar, May 6: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds across most parts of Odisha from May 7 to May 13, prompting the issuance of multiple yellow warnings.
For May 7, a yellow warning has been issued for several districts, including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Nabarangapur. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph are likely in these areas.
In addition, districts such as Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, and Balangir may experience similar weather conditions with slightly lower wind speeds of 30–40 kmph, particularly during afternoon or evening hours.
The IMD has extended yellow warnings for May 8 to May 11, covering coastal, northern, and southern districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar, with thunderstorms and winds of 30–40 kmph expected.
The weather agency has advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms, avoid open areas, and take necessary safety measures against lightning strikes and strong winds.
