Jharsuguda sizzles at 41.4°c, hottest in Odisha
Bhubaneswar, April 28: Jharsuguda recorded a scorching 41.4°C at 11:30 AM on Monday, emerging as the hottest place in Odisha, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The early spike in temperature signals a harsh summer ahead, particularly for western and interior parts of the state.
Several districts witnessed a sharp rise in mercury levels by mid-morning. Rourkela followed closely at 39.8°C, while Sambalpur registered 39.2°C and Hirakud touched 38.6°C. Other areas also reported high temperatures, including Keonjhar at 37.6°C, Chandbali at 36.4°C, Balasore at 35.8°C, and the state capital Bhubaneswar at 35.6°C.
In contrast, coastal regions remained relatively cooler. Puri recorded 32°C, Paradip 31.2°C, and Gopalpur 30.8°C during the same period.
The IMD classifies temperatures above 40°C as extreme heat, 38–40°C as severe heat, and 35–38°C as intense heat. With rising temperatures posing health risks, especially to vulnerable groups, the IMD has advised people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure between 11 AM and 4 PM, and wear light, loose clothing.
