Odisha heatwave to persist till April 25; schools shut in several districts
Bhubaneswar, April 22: The India Meteorological Department (MeT) has predicted no immediate relief from the ongoing heatwave in Odisha, with extreme temperatures expected to continue till April 25.
On Wednesday, the temperature in Bhubaneswar touched 41°C, while more than half of the state recorded temperatures above 40°C. The MeT Department has issued heatwave alerts for several districts, warning that temperatures may soar up to 45°C in places like Titilagarh, Balangir, and Jharsuguda over the next few days.
In response to the severe weather conditions, district administrations have announced school closures to safeguard students. In Sundargarh, all schools will remain closed till April 27. Authorities in Sambalpur have extended holidays till April 24, while schools in Gajapati district will remain shut from April 22 to April 24.
Officials clarified that the closure applies to students from nursery to Class XII, though examinations will continue as per the pre-scheduled timetable.
With heatwave conditions intensifying, authorities have urged residents to take precautions, avoid exposure during peak hours, and stay hydrated as the state braces for several more days of extreme heat.
