New rail line to Odisha bauxite mines declared ‘Special Railway Project’
Bhubaneswar, April 22: The Ministry of Railways has declared a new broad-gauge railway line in Odisha as a “Special Railway Project,” a move aimed at boosting mineral transport and strengthening industrial infrastructure in the state.
The notification, published in The Gazette of India (Extraordinary) under S.O. 1983(E), pertains to the proposed railway line connecting Tikiri Station with the Kutrumali and Sijumali bauxite mines under the Waltair Division of the East Coast Railway.
According to officials, the project has been brought under Clause (37A) of Section 2 of the Railways Act, 1989. This classification allows the Central Government to expedite key processes such as statutory clearances and land acquisition, ensuring faster implementation of infrastructure projects deemed to be of national importance.
The proposed rail corridor is expected to significantly enhance connectivity to Odisha’s major bauxite mining regions. By directly linking mineral-rich areas with the railway network, it will facilitate faster and more efficient transportation of raw materials.
Once completed, the project is likely to boost mineral evacuation capacity, reduce logistics costs, and improve supply chain efficiency, contributing to regional economic growth and supporting the country’s industrial development.
