Woman found murdered a day after engagement in Jagatsinghpur; boyfriend under suspicion
Bhubaneswar, April 22: A 24-year-old woman was allegedly murdered near Pakanpur on the outskirts of Jagatsinghpur district on Tuesday, just a day after her engagement ceremony, sending shockwaves through the area.
The deceased, identified as Sasmita Das of Kathiapada village, was found with deep neck injuries believed to have been inflicted by a sharp weapon. Her body was recovered in a semi-naked condition, prompting police to suspect possible sexual assault prior to the murder.
According to family members, Sasmita got engaged on Sunday (April 19) at a temple in Dhuanpari village at her maternal uncle’s residence to a youth from Bhadrak. She had been staying there after the ceremony. On Monday, her boyfriend—reportedly aware of the engagement—brought her back home and later claimed he was leaving for Jamshedpur, where he works.
On Tuesday evening, Sasmita left home saying she was visiting a relative but did not return. Her body was later found by villagers near agricultural fields.
Police, along with a scientific team and sniffer dogs, have launched an investigation. A case has been registered, and the boyfriend, currently absconding, is the prime suspect.
