Nationwide trade union strike disrupts normal life in Odisha; rail, road services hit
Bhubaneswar, Feb 12: A 12-hour nationwide strike called by 10 central trade unions on Thursday significantly affected normal life across Odisha, triggering protests and demonstrations in multiple districts.
The bandh, which received support from the Congress and Biju Shramik Samukhya, led to widespread disruptions in vehicular movement, with several major roads witnessing blockades since morning. Protesters staged sit-ins and picketing at key intersections, affecting public transport and private travel alike.
Markets, business establishments and offices remained partially or completely closed in many areas as trade union members enforced the shutdown. Daily commuters faced hardships due to reduced bus and auto services, while industrial activities were also impacted in select pockets.
Rail services were disrupted in some places after agitators staged demonstrations on railway tracks and at stations. In Balasore district, striking workers blocked the Bangiriposi–Puri Express, halting the train for a considerable period.
Demonstrations were also reported from various town centres, where union members raised slogans pressing for their demands related to labour rights, wage security and social protection. Security forces were deployed at sensitive locations, and further monitoring of the situation is underway.
