Odisha records 765 dolphins in latest marine census
Bhubaneswar, Feb 11: Odisha has achieved a significant milestone in marine conservation, with the latest dolphin census recording 765 dolphins of various species along the state’s coastline, including the ecologically rich Chilika Lake. The survey, conducted in January, reflects the positive impact of sustained conservation initiatives and improved community participation in protecting marine wildlife.
According to the census data, 208 Irrawaddy dolphins were sighted, with the majority — 159 — found in Chilika Lake, reaffirming its status as one of the species’ most important habitats. Another nine Irrawaddy dolphins were recorded in Rajnagar. Dolphin sightings were also reported from coastal divisions such as Balasore, Berhampur, and Puri.
The population of Humpback dolphins was the highest at 495. In addition, Bottlenose, Spinner, and Finless dolphins were documented during the enumeration, indicating healthy marine biodiversity along Odisha’s coast.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Prem Kumar Jha credited the encouraging numbers to effective conservation planning, habitat protection, and awareness drives involving local fishing communities. Officials noted that variations in Irrawaddy dolphin numbers between Rajnagar and other regions point to natural migration patterns.
Overall, the dolphin population has remained stable over the past five years, signalling long-term conservation success.
