IMD issues yellow warning as cold wave tightens grip on Odisha
Bhubaneswar, Jan 12: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a yellow warning for cold wave conditions in parts of Odisha, urging residents to stay cautious as minimum temperatures continue to fall across the state. The warning highlights the intensifying cold spell affecting both interior and coastal regions.
As per the Midday Weather Bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, cold wave conditions are very likely to prevail in isolated pockets of Jharsuguda, Angul and Boudh districts till the morning of January 13. The alert has been extended, with similar conditions expected to continue in these areas till January 14. From January 14 to January 15, the cold wave is likely to spread further, affecting districts such as Sundargarh, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khordha, Dhenkanal and Kendrapada.
The bulletin reported a marked fall in minimum temperatures by around 5°C at one or two places, while several other areas recorded a drop of 2–4°C. North Interior Odisha has been particularly impacted, with night temperatures dipping well below normal. Rourkela recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 6.7°C, indicating the severity of the cold spell in the plains.
Despite the chill, dry weather is expected to prevail across Odisha, with no major synoptic system influencing the region. Moderate fog was reported in parts of Kalahandi, while light morning fog or mist is likely in Bhubaneswar and nearby areas, followed by clear skies later in the day.
