Court orders seizure of Dhenkanal Tehsildar’s office assets over unpaid land compensation
Bhubaneswar, Dec 10: In a rare and dramatic enforcement move, the Civil Judge Court in Dhenkanal has ordered the seizure of furniture and official assets from the Tehsildar’s office after authorities failed to pay court-mandated land acquisition compensation. The action follows a petition filed by Satyabadi Behera of Bajichowk, whose 12-decimal land was acquired for the construction of a flyover.
Behera was initially offered ₹6 lakh as compensation. However, after the matter reached court in 2013, the Civil Judge ruled in 2023 that he was entitled to ₹13 lakh, including accrued interest. Despite the revised order, the compensation amount was not disbursed by the concerned authorities.
Taking note of the non-compliance, the court directed that movable government property belonging to the Land Acquisition Officer and Tehsildar be seized to ensure enforcement of its judgment. Acting on the order, officials confiscated several items from the Tehsildar’s office, including a Bolero vehicle, almirah, computer system, tables, chairs, and other office furniture.
The incident has sparked discussions across the district, with many viewing it as a strong reminder of the judiciary’s stance on enforcing citizen rights in land acquisition cases.
