Leopard rescued after being caught in poacher’s snare in Angul forest
Bhubaneswar, Dec 9: A tense but successful rescue operation unfolded in Angul district on Tuesday after a leopard was found trapped in a poacher’s snare in the Karatapata Forest Section. The incident sparked an immediate response from Forest Department officials, who rushed to the spot as soon as distress calls from the big cat were reported.
According to preliminary reports, the snare had been set by poachers on Monday night, allegedly intended to capture wild boars. However, the leopard wandered into the trap, becoming ensnared and severely distressed. Villagers in the vicinity heard the animal’s cries early Tuesday morning and promptly alerted the Forest Department, enabling a rapid response.
Using a drone camera, officials were able to quickly locate the trapped leopard within the dense forest. A well-coordinated rescue operation was then launched, involving forest personnel, veterinarians, and wildlife experts. The team worked carefully to tranquilize the leopard, assess its condition, and safely free it from the snare.
Forest officials confirmed that the leopard sustained minor injuries but is now receiving medical care. The rescue team’s swift action likely prevented a more tragic outcome. Authorities have also intensified patrolling in the area and launched an investigation to identify the poachers responsible for setting the illegal trap.
The incident highlights the persistent threat of poaching in the region and the need for continued vigilance to protect wildlife in Odisha’s forests.
