Odisha Govt enhances maoist surrender package to boost rehabilitation efforts
Bhubaneswar, Nov 28: The Odisha government has introduced a significantly revised surrender and rehabilitation package aimed at encouraging misguided youths associated with the CPI (Maoist) and its frontal organisations to return to the mainstream. The enhanced package offers substantial financial incentives based on the type of weapon surrendered, the rank of the cadre, and the rewards announced on their heads.
Under the revised structure, Maoists surrendering with weapons will receive: Rs 4.95 lakh for a Light Machine Gun (LMG), Rs 3.30 lakh for an AK-47, and Rs 1.65 lakh for an SLR rifle. Additionally, those carrying a reward of Rs 10 lakh will receive an extra Rs 5 lakh, further motivating high-profile cadres to surrender.
The rank-based incentives have also been increased considerably. Politburo and Central Committee members will receive Rs 1.10 crore, State Committee and Special Zonal Committee members Rs 55 lakh, Regional Committee members Rs 33 lakh, Divisional Committee members Rs 27.5 lakh, and lower-ranked divisional cadres Rs 22 lakh. The government has also committed to withdrawing minor cases registered against surrendered Maoists.
In its notification, the Home Department added that every surrendered naxalite, with or without weapons, will be provided Rs 25,000, besides the weapon-compensation amount. Those carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh or more will receive an additional Rs 10 lakh, to be deposited as a bank fixed deposit, with interest paid to the surrendering individual.
The initiative aligns with the Centre’s rehabilitation framework and aims to reintegrate former Maoists into society while promoting long-term peace and development in affected regions.
