Woman set ablaze by in-laws over dowry demand in Ganjam

Bhubaneswar, July 14: In a shocking incident in Kanheipur village under Khallikote police limits in Ganjam district, a young woman was allegedly set on fire by her brother-in-law and mother-in-law over dowry demands. The victim, identified as 24-year-old Arati Parida, sustained 40 per cent burn injuries and is currently receiving treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
According to sources, Arati had married Akash Parida two years ago. While the marriage started off peacefully, things reportedly took a dark turn in recent months when her in-laws began pressuring her for additional dowry. Arati’s family has alleged that she was subjected to regular mental and physical harassment.
The situation escalated late Sunday night following a heated argument between Arati and her mother-in-law. In a horrifying turn of events, her brother-in-law Prakash and mother-in-law allegedly doused her with petrol and set her on fire.
Initially taken to the local hospital in Khallikote, Arati was later referred to MKCG as her condition worsened. Police have launched an investigation into the matter and are currently interrogating the accused family members.
