Historic Swapneswar Mahadev Temple gets ASI protected status

Bhubaneswar, July 5: In a significant move toward preserving Odisha’s ancient heritage, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has officially declared the historic Swapneswar Mahadev Temple in Punjiama village under Banapur block of Khordha district as a protected monument. The announcement was made on Saturday by Odisha Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan via his official handle on X (formerly Twitter).
“I am pleased to share that the Government of India, through the Ministry of Culture and ASI, has officially declared the historic Swapneswar Mahadev Temple as a Protected Monument,” Harichandan wrote. He hailed the decision as a vital step in conserving Odisha’s rich cultural and architectural legacy.
Believed to have been built during the reign of the Shailodbhava dynasty in the 6th century, the temple is a rare and early example of Odisha’s spiritual and architectural traditions. Situated in the Niladri Prasad Panchayat, the site has long attracted historians, archaeologists, and devotees alike.
The ASI’s recognition follows decades of advocacy by heritage conservationists. With protected status, the temple will now receive regular maintenance and conservation support, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
