IMD forecasts new low-pressure system; Odisha likely to see heavy rainfall from June 26 to 29

Bhubaneswar, June 20: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the formation of another low-pressure system over the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh around June 27, which is likely to trigger widespread heavy rainfall across several parts of Odisha from June 26 to 29.
According to the IMD, this developing system will bring significant showers, potentially alleviating the state's rainfall deficit further. The southwest monsoon is also expected to cover the entire country by June 26, aiding in more consistent rainfall patterns.
In the short term, rainfall is expected today in Sundargarh and Jharsuguda, while Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar are likely to witness heavy rainfall on June 21 and 22.
On Thursday, Hirakud recorded 32.6 mm of rainfall, while other notable rainfall figures include Sambalpur (19.3 mm), Jharsuguda (17.4 mm), Talcher (16.4 mm), Rourkela (15.5 mm), and Angul (15 mm).
As of June 15, Odisha was facing a 42% rainfall deficit, but the recent showers over the past four days have helped partially bridge the gap.
Heavy rain has also been reported in Similipal and Bareshani, leading to a rise in water levels in the Subarnarekha River, which has now crossed the danger mark, raising flood concerns in low-lying areas.
