Security forces seize 2.5 tonnes of explosives in Maoist-hit Odisha forest

Bhubaneswar, June 2: In a significant breakthrough, security forces have seized nearly 2.5 tonnes of explosives during a joint operation in a Maoist-affected region of Odisha. The operation was carried out by the COBRA Battalion of the CRPF, along with the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Odisha Police, in the dense forest area near Koida in Sundargarh district.
The explosives were found buried underground in the Tiriliposh forest, falling under the jurisdiction of Jareikela police station. Acting on specific intelligence inputs regarding Maoist movement in the area, the forces launched a carefully coordinated search using metal detectors and sniffer dogs to uncover the concealed cache.
According to officials, the explosives were likely intended for large-scale attacks targeting security personnel, infrastructure, or civilian areas. The massive haul has now been sent for forensic analysis to determine the exact composition and possible source.
This seizure follows an earlier incident in which nearly four tonnes of explosives were reported stolen from the Banko stone quarry area under K. Balang police limits. Authorities suspect Maoist involvement in both incidents and have intensified surveillance in the region.
