Over 40 elephants, 5 leopards among 200 wild animals dead in Odisha since July

Bhubaneswar, Nov 26: Odisha Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia informed the House on Tuesday that over 40 elephants, 5 leopards, and 200 other wild animals have died in the state between July 1 and November 20, 2024.
In a written reply, the minister stated that investigations are underway regarding these deaths. So far, 26 individuals have been arrested in connection with the deaths of elephants, while 14 arrests have been made related to leopard fatalities. Additionally, two forest guards and one forester have been suspended for negligence in their duties.
To prevent further wildlife deaths, the Forest Department has implemented several initiatives. These include improving habitats, planting trees that serve as food for wildlife, developing grazing lands, creating artificial water reservoirs, and deploying squads to prevent forest fires and monitor poachers. The department is also working on increasing public awareness about wildlife protection.
Khuntia reassured the House that these measures are part of a broader strategy to safeguard Odisha’s wildlife and biodiversity.
