Bhubaneswar, Sept 11: A gold merchant and his wife are in critical condition after being allegedly attacked by a thief who broke into their residence in Berhampur's Gaudasahi area early Wednesday morning.

The intruder, armed with a sharp weapon, reportedly assaulted the couple before fleeing. Police have launched an investigation and are actively searching for the suspect.

The incident occurred at the home of gold trader Satish Kumar Subudhi, located in Gaudasahi under the jurisdiction of Bada Bazar police station. According to initial reports, the thief gained entry by cutting through the iron grill.

Satish and his wife were awakened by noises and confronted the intruder, who then attacked Satish with the sharp weapon. When his wife intervened, she was also assaulted before the thief fled the scene.

The couple was immediately rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where their condition remains critical. Police have since initiated a manhunt to apprehend the attacker.
