IMD predicts severe rainfall in Odisha; coastal areas on high alert
Bhubaneswar, Sept 9: Several parts of Odisha are expected to experience heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours due to the influence of a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area over the west-central and adjacent northwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression on Monday. The wind speed, currently at 7 kmph, is expected to increase as the system approaches the Puri coast by noon. As a result, heavy rains are anticipated in five districts, and a yellow alert has been issued for 12 districts today. The IMD predicts heavy rainfall in both coastal and interior regions of Odisha later in the day.
The deep depression is moving northward along the Odisha coast, heading towards Odisha and West Bengal. It is expected to cross the coast between Puri and Digha by Monday noon.
The IMD has warned that the impact will be most severe on Monday and Tuesday. Heavy rainfall (70 mm to 200 mm) is expected in Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Cuttack, and Dhenkanal districts today. Additionally, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted for Ganjam, Koraput, Kandhamal, Bolangir, Bargarh, Boudh, Sonpur, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Sambalpur, Angul, and Nayagarh districts, with an orange warning issued for these areas.
