IMD forecasts heavy rain in Odisha as low-pressure system intensifies

Bhubaneswar, Sept 6: A low-pressure area that formed over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal has now shifted to the central and adjoining northern Bay of Bengal. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height. This system is expected to gradually move northwards and intensify into a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent areas of Gangetic West Bengal, northern Odisha, and the Bangladesh coast around September 9.
Following this, it is likely to move west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal and adjacent areas of northern Odisha, Jharkhand, and northern Chhattisgarh over the next 3-4 days, according to a release by the regional center of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
As a result, several districts in Odisha are forecasted to receive heavy rainfall over the next three days starting Friday. Coastal Odisha is particularly expected to experience heavy rain on Ganesh Puja day, Saturday. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in 18 districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, and Bolangir.
