Excise Minister updates Assembly on Chikiti hooch incident

Bhubaneswar, Aug 23: Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan informed the Odisha Assembly today about the ongoing efforts to address the hooch tragedy in Chikiti, Ganjam district.
Responding to an Adjournment notice by Congress MLAs Ramachandra Kadam and Ashok Kumar Das, the Minister reported that 18 individuals were initially admitted to the Chikiti Community Health Centre (CHC), where they received prompt first aid. Subsequently, 15 patients were transferred to Berhampur MKCG Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.
Harichandan highlighted that a multidisciplinary team, led by the Ganjam Superintendent of Police, has been formed to manage the situation. This team includes health department officials, the Sarpanch, local Ward Members, Revenue Officers, Police, and Block Administration. A public awareness campaign was also launched, urging those affected to seek immediate medical attention.
As of today, 17 patients are receiving treatment at Berhampur MKCG Medical College and Hospital, with 13 patients in the casualty ward reported to be in stable condition.
Several patients are undergoing treatment in the ICU, with two fatalities reported on August 21: Jura Behera and Loknath Behera from Jenapur village under Chikiti police station. The remaining 15 patients continue to receive treatment.
The Minister assured that the situation is being closely monitored, and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the well-being of those affected. Following the incident, local police have arrested six individuals involved in the illegal hooch trade.
