Veteran Odisha leader Surendranath Naik passes away at 93
Bhubaneswar, July 5: Former Odisha Minister Surendranath Naik passed away at his residence early Friday morning at the age of 93.
Naik, a seven-time MLA from Kakatpur, had been suffering from age-related ailments for some time. In addition to his tenure as an MLA, he served as chairman of Astarang Panchayat Samiti from 1960 to 1967.
Inspired by former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik, Naik began his political journey early, being active in politics since his student days. This early start helped him become a seasoned politician and respected leader in Odisha.
Naik was arrested in 1968 for protesting a bus fare hike and again in 1975 under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA). Throughout his political career, Naik held various ministerial portfolios, including agriculture, revenue, and education.
His seven terms as an MLA and multiple ministerial roles established him as a veteran leader. His absence will be deeply felt in the legislative assembly and political circles. Naik's passing leaves a significant void, and his legacy will be cherished by the people of Odisha.
