Former Bari MLA Debasis Nayak to run as independent in Odisha Assembly elections

Bhubaneswar, May 3: Former Bari MLA and Odisha BJP leader Debasis Nayak has declared his intention to run as an Independent candidate in the upcoming state Assembly elections, representing the Bari constituency in Jajpur district.

Nayak made this announcement via his social media platform after the BJP unveiled its fifth list of MLA candidates, with Umesh Jena nominated for the Bari constituency. Expressing dissatisfaction over not securing the BJP ticket for Bari, Nayak has opted to part ways with the party and contest the elections independently.

Taking to social media, Debasis Nayak stated, “I have resolved to stand for the Assembly elections in Bari as an Independent candidate. The people of Bari are my source of strength, and I am committed to serving them.”

Nayak previously secured victories in the Bari Assembly seat during the 2009 and 2014 elections under the BJD banner. However, in 2019, the BJD selected Sunanda Das as their candidate for the seat, prompting Nayak to join the BJP. Despite his anticipation of securing the BJP nomination for Bari, Nayak was disappointed by the party's decision to field Umesh Jena instead.
