Major fire breaks out at NTPC plant in Odisha's Talcher

Talcher, April 6: A significant fire erupted at the NTPC plant in Kaniha, situated in the Talcher region of Odisha's Angul district, on Saturday. Initial reports indicate that the fire originated at a conveyor belt within the facility.
The incident has resulted in heavy smoke engulfing the area, causing concern among both the plant's staff and local residents. Upon notification, at least two teams from the Fire Services department promptly arrived at the scene to commence firefighting efforts. Additionally, the plant's firefighting unit mobilized to combat the blaze.
Although the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, preliminary suspicions point towards coal transport via the conveyor belt as a potential trigger.
According to NTPC sources, the fire broke out at approximately 8:10 am at conveyor belt sections 15 A and B, as well as at coal transfer point 16 situated between Unit 2 and 3. Swift action by the CISF Fire Wing and the Plant Disaster team successfully extinguished the flames, with only minor injuries reported, requiring minimal first aid for a CISF personnel involved in firefighting.
In a precautionary move, Unit 3 with a capacity of 500 MW was temporarily shut down to control the spread of the fire. However, all other units remain operational. An assessment is underway to determine the root cause of the fire and evaluate any resulting damage, with plans for necessary repairs to commence promptly.
