Keonjhar, Dec 25: A 39-year-old man, identified as Satrughna Mahanta, has been apprehended on charges of assaulting his elderly mother in Odisha's Keonjhar district. 

The disturbing incident unfolded in Saraspasi village under Champua village's jurisdiction, leading to Mahanta's arrest following the incident's widespread circulation on social media, sparking public outrage.

Police received information from concerned villagers that the elderly woman, subjected to the assault, had sought medical attention at a local hospital. Responding promptly, police recorded her statement, and subsequent investigations substantiated the allegations against Mahanta. Consequently, a case was registered against him, leading to his arrest.

Reports reveal that the elderly victim, who has been living alone due to familial discord with her son, relies on government rations and support from villagers for sustenance. Recently, she sold a cauliflower from her son's farm to a neighbor, triggering the brutal assault on December 20. 

The assailant, upon learning of the incident, tied his mother to an electric pole and subjected her to severe physical abuse. Disturbing video and photographic evidence of the assault swiftly circulated on social media, contributing to the arrest of Satrughna Mahanta.
