Bhubaneswar, Sep 21: A well-marked low-pressure area over the westcentral and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a Depression within the next 24 hours, followed by further intensification into a Deep Depression during the subsequent 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

The system is expected to move west-northwestwards towards the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coasts, reaching the region around the morning of September 23.

The weather system is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts of Odisha. The IMD has issued an Orange Warning for September 22-23 and a Red Warning for September 23-25 for vulnerable areas.

On September 23-24, heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over Koraput, Gajapati and Ganjam. A Red Warning has also been issued for Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri for September 24-25.

For September 22-23, an Orange Warning covers Balasore, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.

Squally winds of 55-65 kmph, gusting up to 75 kmph, are likely along the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts from September 23 to 24. The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea and asked those already at sea to return by the evening of September 21.

The rainfall may trigger waterlogging, localised flooding, landslides and disruptions to road and rail traffic, besides possible damage to trees, power lines and vulnerable structures.

Meanwhile, Odisha recorded rainfall of up to 6 cm at Banaigarh in Sundargarh and Barmul in Nayagarh in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on September 21.
