Bhubaneswar, Sep 21: Two elderly women, who were reportedly sisters-in-law, were killed after being hit by a moving train near Basta railway station in Balasore district on Monday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Rukchand Marandi of Baunsatopha village and her sister-in-law, who was a resident of Parulia village.

According to preliminary reports, the two women had gone to Basta market earlier in the day for their daily needs. While returning home, they reportedly attempted to cross the railway tracks near Basta station.

At that moment, the Howrah-bound Shalimar Express was passing through the area. The train struck the two women, resulting in their deaths at the spot. The incident reportedly caused panic in the area, with local residents informing the authorities.

On receiving information about the accident, police personnel reached the spot and recovered the bodies. The bodies were subsequently taken for necessary legal procedures.

Police have initiated an investigation into the incident to ascertain the exact circumstances under which the women entered the railway tracks. Officials are also expected to examine available information regarding the movement of the train and the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with crossing railway tracks, particularly near stations and busy railway corridors. Further details regarding the investigation are awaited.
