Ujjain’s Khade Hanuman Idol Remains Unmoved Amid Road-Widening Work

UJJAIN: An unusual incident involving an idol of Lord Hanuman at the revered Khade Hanuman Temple in Ujjain has attracted widespread attention, with devotees viewing the development as a matter of faith while authorities and technical experts seek to understand the reasons behind it.

The incident reportedly occurred during road-widening and infrastructure development work being undertaken in Ujjain ahead of the proposed Simhastha Kumbh in 2028. The temple, located in the Bada Sarafa-Kamri Marg area, came under the project’s footprint, leading authorities to consider relocating the shrine and its prominent Hanuman idol.

According to reports, the approximately eight-foot-tall idol could not be shifted despite repeated attempts. While the surrounding temple structure was reportedly demolished as part of the development work, the idol remained firmly in position. Heavy machinery was also reportedly used during the process, but efforts to move the idol were unsuccessful.

The development has triggered considerable interest among devotees and local residents. Many devotees believe that the idol’s resistance to relocation represents a divine indication and have urged the authorities to protect the religious site. For them, the incident is closely connected with the spiritual importance attached to the shrine and Lord Hanuman.

At the same time, officials and experts are reportedly examining the matter from a scientific and structural perspective. Experts associated with technical institutions, including IITs, have reportedly been approached to help determine the physical reasons behind the difficulty in moving the idol. Questions regarding the foundation, construction beneath the idol and the nature of its installation are among the issues that may require detailed examination.

The age and historical origin of the idol have also become subjects of discussion. Local accounts reportedly describe the temple as being around 170 years old, while some claims suggest that the idol itself could be significantly older. There have even been suggestions linking it to the Paramara period and King Bhoj. However, such historical claims have not been conclusively established and would require archaeological and historical verification.

The situation has also developed into a sensitive issue involving religious sentiment and urban infrastructure. Political leaders, saints and devotees have reportedly appealed to the government to reconsider any plan that could result in the removal of the idol.

Following the demolition of the surrounding structure, reports indicate that arrangements have been made to protect the idol under a temporary covering. Devotees have continued to gather at the location to offer prayers and conduct religious activities.

The Khade Hanuman episode has thus emerged as an unusual intersection of faith, heritage and development. While devotees see the unmoved idol as a powerful expression of divine presence, authorities face the practical challenge of balancing road development with the preservation of a site carrying deep religious significance.

Further technical and historical investigations are expected to shed light on the reasons behind the idol’s immovability and help determine the future course of action for the revered shrine.
