Bhubaneswar, Sept 2: More than 40 lakh vehicles in Odisha are currently operating without valid insurance, Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena said on Wednesday, urging vehicle owners to keep all mandatory documents updated.

Jena said the state government has directed the Transport Department to intensify enforcement drives against vehicles found plying without valid insurance and other required documents. The move is aimed at strengthening road safety and ensuring compliance with motor vehicle regulations.

“Insurance is mandatory for vehicles plying on the roads, and we are keeping a close watch on the issue. In our state, more than 40 lakh vehicles still do not have valid insurance,” Jena said while speaking to the media.

The Minister also referred to the Supreme Court’s directions regarding strict guidelines on vehicle insurance and said enforcement would be strengthened across the state. Transport officials have been instructed to take action against violators during checking drives.

At the same time, the government is focusing on awareness among vehicle owners about the importance of maintaining valid documents.

Jena appealed to motorists to ensure that their vehicles have a valid insurance policy, fitness certificate, Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, Registration Certificate (RC) and Driving Licence (DL).

He urged vehicle owners to renew their insurance and other documents within the stipulated period to avoid penalties and legal action.
