Bhubaneswar, Aug 11: Odisha is likely to get a new Lokayukta soon, with the selection process for the anti-corruption ombudsman already underway, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters, Pujari said the first meeting of the committee responsible for selecting the Lokayukta has already been held. He said the process would now proceed in accordance with the prescribed legal provisions and culminate in the appointment of a new Lokayukta.

“The first meeting has already been held. The process has started and will conclude with the selection of the Lokayukta. The decision will be taken on the basis of a majority,” Pujari said.

The selection committee comprises key constitutional functionaries, including the Chief Minister, Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly and Leader of the Opposition. The committee will consider eligible candidates before arriving at a decision through the prescribed procedure.

The Lokayukta plays an important role in addressing allegations of corruption and ensuring accountability in public administration. The appointment of a regular Lokayukta is therefore considered significant for strengthening the state’s anti-corruption mechanism.

Pujari expressed confidence that Odisha would have a new Lokayukta in the coming days. The government is expected to take further steps after the committee completes its deliberations and finalises its recommendation.
