Bhubaneswar, Aug 7: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Warning for Odisha for the next 24 hours, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall in several parts of the state and urging people and district administrations to remain on high alert. The weather office has warned that prevailing atmospheric conditions are likely to trigger widespread rain accompanied by heavy to very heavy showers across many districts.

According to the IMD, a cyclonic circulation has formed over North Odisha and the adjoining Gangetic West Bengal region. The weather system is currently located over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining North Odisha-Gangetic West Bengal coast at an altitude of around 0.9 km above mean sea level.

Meteorologists said the cyclonic circulation is likely to intensify into a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. The development of this system is expected to further strengthen rainfall activity across Odisha over the coming days.

The IMD also stated that another upper-air cyclonic circulation remains active over South Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh. This system extends from 1.5 km to 5.8 km above mean sea level and is interacting with the other weather systems, creating favourable conditions for widespread rainfall.

In view of the Red Warning, the IMD has advised people to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Authorities have also been urged to monitor vulnerable locations closely and take necessary precautionary measures to minimise the impact of heavy rainfall and possible waterlogging.
