Bhubaneswar, Aug 7: The Commissionerate Police have arrested a rape accused who escaped from police custody in Bhubaneswar, ending a brief but intensive manhunt. The accused was traced to Bengaluru within a day of his escape and brought back to the Odisha capital on Friday to face further legal proceedings.

The accused, identified as Rudra Prasad Sutar, was apprehended by a special police team in Bengaluru and produced before a local court in Karnataka. After completing the required legal formalities, he was brought to Bhubaneswar by train on Friday morning and is scheduled to be produced before a local court.

Sutar had been arrested a few days ago by the Mahila Police from Bhadrak in connection with an alleged rape case registered on the basis of a complaint filed by a woman.

According to police, the accused managed to escape while having breakfast at a canteen during police custody. The incident triggered a massive search operation, and a separate case was registered at the Capital Police Station regarding his escape.

Using technical surveillance and intelligence inputs, the Commissionerate Police tracked his movements and located him in Bengaluru. A special team was immediately dispatched to Karnataka, where he was arrested and taken into custody.

Police officials said the accused would now face proceedings in both the rape case and the case related to his escape from lawful custody. The successful operation has drawn attention to the swift coordination between Odisha and Karnataka police in tracing the absconding accused.
