Bhubaneswar, Aug. 3: Coastal Odisha is witnessing uncomfortable weather conditions as high humidity levels continue to make temperatures feel significantly hotter than the actual readings. Meteorologists have attributed the sultry conditions to a weak monsoon flow over the state, resulting in oppressive weather across several coastal districts.

According to weather scientist Uma Shankar Das, data recorded on August 3 shows a sharp rise in the heat index, which measures how hot it feels when humidity is combined with air temperature. Although maximum temperatures remained in the low to mid-30s Celsius, elevated humidity has made outdoor conditions much more uncomfortable.

Among major locations, Balasore recorded a temperature of 34.4°C with 72 per cent humidity, pushing the heat index to a sweltering 49°C. Puri registered 33.4°C with 74 per cent humidity, resulting in a heat index of 46°C, while Chandbali recorded 33.2°C and 73 per cent humidity, also producing a heat index of 46°C. In Bhubaneswar, the mercury touched 33.4°C with 69 per cent humidity, making it feel like 44°C.

Meteorological experts said the prevailing conditions are due to the monsoon trough remaining north of its normal position, weakening monsoon currents over Odisha and increasing humidity levels, particularly along the coastal belt.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised people to stay well hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during afternoon hours and take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related discomfort until weather conditions improve.
