Bhubaneswar, July 31: A local trader was allegedly murdered late on Thursday night at Gayatri Basti under the jurisdiction of Lingaraj Police Station in Bhubaneswar, triggering panic in the locality. The deceased has been identified as Jitu Kandi, who operated a paan shop in the area.

Jitu's blood-stained body was found near his shop on Friday morning by local residents, who immediately informed the police. Preliminary investigation suggests that he died after sustaining severe head injuries inflicted during the attack.

Police personnel, along with forensic experts, rushed to the spot and began a detailed investigation. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death, while investigators are collecting evidence from the crime scene.

According to local residents, Jitu was allegedly involved in collecting money from nearby business establishments, and police are examining whether any dispute related to these activities led to the murder. He was reportedly seen consuming alcohol with four acquaintances on Thursday night, hours before the incident.

Police have detained three persons—Gangadhar Behera, Chagu and Babuna Behera—for questioning in connection with the case, while another suspect, identified as Gopal Das, is reportedly absconding.

Investigators are also looking into allegations that Jitu was engaged in an illegal liquor business. Although his shop had reportedly been sealed by police earlier, he was said to have resumed operations. The exact motive behind the murder is yet to be established, and further investigation is in progress.
