Bhubaneswar, July 31: The authorities of the Hirakud Dam on Friday opened two additional sluice gates as the reservoir continues to receive heavy inflows from persistent rainfall in its upper catchment areas. The move has heightened concerns over rising water levels in the Mahanadi river and prompted the administration to step up flood preparedness in downstream districts.

With the opening of the two additional gates, the total number of operational sluice gates has increased to 14, including nine on the left side and five on the right. The controlled release of excess water is aimed at maintaining a safe reservoir level while managing the increasing inflow into the dam.

Officials said the continuous discharge is expected to raise the water level of the Mahanadi downstream, prompting authorities to closely monitor the river's flow and vulnerable locations. District administrations have advised residents living in low-lying areas along the riverbank to remain vigilant, avoid venturing near the river, and follow all safety advisories issued by local authorities.

The decision comes as the water level in the Hirakud Reservoir has witnessed a steady increase over the past 24 hours due to widespread rainfall across the upper catchment regions. Disaster management teams and local officials have been placed on alert to respond to any emergency arising from the rising river levels. Authorities said the situation is being monitored round the clock, and further decisions regarding additional gate openings will be taken depending on inflow and weather conditions.
