Bhubaneswar, July 27: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a Red Warning for three districts of Odisha, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall as a Deep Depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-North Odisha coast continued its slow northward movement. The weather system is likely to cross the coast between Balasore and Canning by Monday afternoon.

According to the IMD’s midday bulletin, the Deep Depression was centred at 8.30 am near latitude 21.4°N and longitude 88.1°E over the northwest Bay of Bengal. It was located around 120 km east-southeast of Balasore, 30 km south of Sagar Island, 70 km east-southeast of Digha, 90 km south of Diamond Harbour, and 110 km south-southwest of Canning. The system is expected to move in a north-northwesterly direction before making landfall later in the day.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers across most parts of Odisha over the next 24 hours. A Red Warning has been issued for Sundargarh, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj, where heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by isolated extremely heavy rain is very likely.

An Orange Warning has been sounded for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Nabarangpur districts. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 50-60 kmph are also expected in several districts.

A Yellow Warning has been issued for Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh districts, where heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely.

The IMD has advised residents, especially those in vulnerable and low-lying areas, to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow official advisories as the weather system moves across the region.
