Bhubaneswar, July 27: Senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and former Odisha Minister Susanta Singh passed away on Monday morning while undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar. He was 53. His demise has left the state's political fraternity in mourning, with leaders across party lines paying tribute to his contributions to public service and Odisha's development.

According to reports, Singh had been battling a prolonged illness for quite some time. His health reportedly deteriorated sharply on Monday morning, and despite the best efforts of the attending doctors, he could not be revived.

Susanta Singh was a prominent political figure from western Odisha and represented the Bhatli Assembly constituency in Bargarh district. He was elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly three consecutive times in 2009, 2014 and 2019 on a BJD ticket. During his political career, he served as the state's Minister for Labour and Rural Development, where he was associated with several welfare and development initiatives.

Known for his close connect with the people, Singh earned respect for actively addressing public grievances and working towards improving rural infrastructure, employment opportunities and social welfare in his constituency. His leadership and commitment to grassroots development made him one of the influential leaders in the region.

The news of his passing has cast a pall of gloom over Odisha's political landscape. Leaders from the Biju Janata Dal, as well as members of other political parties, expressed profound grief and conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family. Many remembered him as a dedicated public representative whose contributions to the state and his constituency will be remembered for years to come.
