Jharsuguda Police arrest murder accused after 28 years on the run
Bhubaneswar, July 10: In a major breakthrough, the Jharsuguda Police have arrested a murder accused who had been absconding for nearly 28 years after escaping from police custody while being transported in 1998. The arrest marks the end of one of the longest manhunts undertaken by the district police.
The accused was wanted in connection with a criminal case registered under Sections 364, 302, 201, 109 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. According to police, he managed to flee despite being in handcuffs during transit in 1998 and remained untraceable for almost three decades.
During his years in hiding, the accused allegedly changed his identity and adopted the name Raju Gonda. He reportedly settled in Raigarh, where he built a new life while concealing his past. To strengthen his false identity and avoid suspicion, he is said to have obtained official documents, including an Aadhaar Card and PAN Card, under the assumed name.
Police said the arrest was made following sustained intelligence gathering, meticulous verification of records and continuous surveillance. Investigators eventually traced the accused to his hideout and took him into custody without incident.
The accused has been produced before the competent court for further legal proceedings.
Senior police officials said the successful arrest demonstrates the force's commitment to ensuring that offenders cannot escape the law, regardless of how much time has passed. The operation also sends a strong message that fugitives will continue to be pursued until they are brought to justice.
