IMD issues yellow alert for Odisha till July 17; thunderstorms and heavy rain likely
Bhubaneswar, July 10: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Warning for several districts of Odisha till July 17, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty surface winds and isolated heavy rainfall over different parts of the State. The weather office has advised residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions during the forecast period.
According to the IMD, on July 11, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Koraput districts.
Similar weather conditions are expected to continue on July 12 and 13, with Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds at isolated places.
On July 14 and 15, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds over Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, along with isolated heavy rainfall in these districts. On July 15, the warning also covers Sundargarh and Koraput for thunderstorm activity.
The focus of the weather system is expected to shift towards heavy rainfall from July 16. The IMD has predicted isolated heavy rain over Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj on July 16, while Bargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj are likely to receive heavy rainfall on July 17.
The weather department has advised people to avoid open areas during thunderstorms, refrain from taking shelter under trees and stay updated with official weather bulletins. Farmers and those working outdoors have also been urged to exercise caution to minimise risks from lightning and strong winds.
