Odisha Police faces shortage of 33,000 personnel, Says DGP Khurania
Bhubaneswar, July 8: Odisha Police is currently facing a shortage of nearly 33,000 personnel, Director General of Police (DGP) Y. B. Khurania said on Wednesday, stressing the urgent need for large-scale recruitment to strengthen law enforcement and improve public safety across the State.
Speaking to reporters in Cuttack, the DGP said the existing police strength is inadequate in view of Odisha's growing population and remains below the recommended police-to-population ratio. He noted that Odisha has fewer police personnel than many other states, making it increasingly challenging to ensure effective policing, maintain law and order, and deliver efficient public services.
To bridge the manpower gap, Khurania said Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has approved the creation of 17,000 new posts in the Odisha Police. When combined with the 16,000 existing vacancies, the total number of posts to be filled through recruitment now stands at around 33,000.
The DGP expressed confidence that the recruitment process would begin soon, enabling the department to significantly enhance its operational strength. He said the additional manpower would reduce the workload on serving police personnel, improve response time, and enhance policing in both urban and rural areas.
Khurania also noted that the recruitment drive would create employment opportunities for thousands of young aspirants preparing for police jobs. He emphasised that strengthening the police force is vital for modernising policing, improving public service delivery, and ensuring a safer environment as Odisha continues to witness rapid urbanisation and development.
