Assam woman arrested in Sambalpur for allegedly cheating hotel and taxi driver
Bhubaneswar, July 1: A woman from Assam was arrested by Ainthapali Police in Odisha's Sambalpur district for allegedly cheating a hotel and a taxi driver by leaving without paying her dues. Police suspect the accused may have been involved in similar fraud cases in other states as well.
The accused has been identified as Monali Hazarika, a resident of Assam. A case was registered at Ainthapali Police Station under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on a complaint filed by Gaurishankar Nayak, Manager of Hotel Narmada Residency.
According to police, Monali checked into Hotel Narmada Residency on June 23 and stayed there for several days. During her stay, she hired a taxi and travelled to various places across Sambalpur city.
Investigators said that on June 28, she allegedly left the hotel without clearing her accommodation bill and also failed to pay the taxi driver for the services provided. Following the complaint, police launched an investigation and gathered evidence regarding her movements.
Acting on credible information, Ainthapali Police traced and apprehended the accused before formally arresting her in connection with the case.
During preliminary investigation, police reportedly found indications that Monali Hazarika may have adopted a similar modus operandi in previous incidents. Officials suspect she could be involved in cheating cases reported from other states, though further verification is underway.
Police are now collecting additional evidence and coordinating with law enforcement agencies in other states to ascertain whether similar complaints have been registered against her.
