Odisha and Chhattisgarh begin 11-day talks on Mahanadi water dispute in Delhi
Bhubaneswar, June 16: An important round of discussions on the long-pending Mahanadi river water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh began in New Delhi on Monday. The intensive deliberations, directed by the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal, will continue for 11 days from June 16 to June 26, 2026.
The discussions are expected to focus on several key issues related to the sharing and management of Mahanadi river water between the two neighbouring states. The dispute has remained a major concern for Odisha, which has repeatedly raised objections over water-related projects undertaken upstream in Chhattisgarh.
Both states had earlier sought detailed discussions to resolve technical and legal issues surrounding the dispute. As part of the process, teams comprising legal experts, engineers and technical officials from Odisha and Chhattisgarh are participating in the meetings.
Odisha Advocate General Pitambar Acharya had informed the Tribunal that representatives from both states would engage in extensive consultations to explore possible solutions. If necessary, experts from the Central Water Commission (CWC) will also assist during the discussions by providing technical inputs and data.
The findings and outcome of the 11-day deliberations will be jointly submitted before the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal for consideration. The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for June 27, when the Tribunal is expected to review the progress made during the discussions.
