India Begin Women's T20 World Cup Campaign with Dominant Victory Over Pakistan

Birmingham, June 15: India made a powerful start to their ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 journey by defeating Pakistan by a convincing margin of 64 runs in a highly anticipated Group A encounter at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham. Displaying excellence in both batting and bowling, the Indian team outperformed their traditional rivals and secured a crucial opening victory in the tournament.

After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, India faced early pressure when two wickets fell within the first few overs. However, the experienced duo of Smriti Mandhana and captain Harmanpreet Kaur steadied the innings with a crucial partnership that shifted the momentum in India's favor. Mandhana played a magnificent knock, scoring 68 runs from 44 deliveries and anchoring the innings with a blend of elegant stroke play and aggressive intent.

Harmanpreet provided valuable support with a composed innings, helping India recover from the early setbacks. Together, the pair built a solid foundation that allowed the middle order to capitalize during the latter stages of the innings. Wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh then delivered a quick cameo, scoring rapidly in the final overs to boost India's total.

At the end of their allotted 20 overs, India posted a challenging score of 170 for 6, putting significant pressure on Pakistan's batting lineup. The total appeared competitive on a pitch that offered some assistance to the bowlers.

Pakistan began their chase positively, with the opening batters showing intent and attacking the Indian bowlers during the powerplay. The team crossed the 50-run mark quickly and looked capable of mounting a serious challenge. Opener Muneeba Ali played some attractive shots and gave Pakistan early momentum.

However, India's bowlers soon turned the game around with disciplined and accurate bowling. The breakthrough wickets halted Pakistan's progress and triggered a collapse in the middle order. Pakistan's batters struggled to build partnerships as wickets fell at regular intervals.

The standout performer of the match was Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma, who produced a remarkable bowling spell. The off-spinner dismantled Pakistan's batting lineup with exceptional control and accuracy, claiming five wickets while conceding only ten runs. Her spell proved decisive in breaking Pakistan's resistance and effectively sealed the contest in India's favor.

Spinner Shree Charani also made an important contribution by taking three wickets and maintaining pressure from the other end. Supported by sharp fielding and effective bowling changes, the Indian team ensured Pakistan never regained control of the chase.

Pakistan were eventually bowled out for 106 runs in the 17th over, handing India a comprehensive 64-run victory. The result not only earned India two valuable points but also provided a significant boost to their net run rate in the group stage.

The emphatic win highlights India's strong preparations and reinforces their status as one of the tournament favorites. With confidence running high, the team will now look to carry this momentum into its upcoming matches as it aims for a successful World Cup campaign.
