Police constable arrested for alleged attempt to sexually assault woman sanitation worker in Cuttack
Bhubaneswar, June 11: Commissionerate Police have arrested a police constable on charges of allegedly attempting to sexually assault a woman sanitation worker near the office of the Reserve Inspector of Cuttack Rural Police. The incident has sparked concern, particularly as it allegedly involved a member of the police force.
According to the complaint filed by the victim, the woman was carrying out sanitation work in the area when the accused constable approached her and allegedly attempted to sexually assault her. The woman resisted and immediately raised an alarm, calling for help from others working nearby.
Police sources said that when the woman tried to fend off the alleged assault, the constable reportedly assaulted her physically. Her cries for help attracted the attention of fellow sanitation workers, who rushed to the spot and intervened.
The co-workers allegedly overpowered the accused and detained him before police personnel arrived. Eyewitnesses stated that the workers confronted the constable and prevented him from fleeing the scene.
Subsequently, the victim lodged a formal complaint accusing the constable of attempted rape, misconduct and physical assault. Acting on the complaint, a team from Commissionerate Police under the jurisdiction of Cantonment Police Station reached the spot and took the accused into custody.
Police have registered a case and arrested the constable. Investigators are currently questioning him and collecting evidence related to the incident. Officials said statements of the victim, eyewitnesses and other workers present at the scene are being recorded as part of the investigation.
Senior police officers have assured that the case will be investigated thoroughly and appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings. Further investigation is underway to ascertain all circumstances surrounding the alleged incident.
