BHUBANESWAR GETS MAJOR RELIEF AS NOR’WESTER RAIN BRINGS SHARP TEMPERATURE DROP
Bhubaneswar, June 7: Residents of Bhubaneswar finally received a welcome break from the intense summer heat after a powerful Nor’wester storm swept through the city, bringing heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and a dramatic fall in temperature. The sudden weather change transformed conditions across the capital city, offering relief to thousands who had been enduring scorching temperatures and high humidity levels over the past several days.
According to weather officials, the city's temperature dropped by nearly 14 degrees Celsius within a few hours of the storm. Before the rain arrived, temperatures had hovered around 40°C, making outdoor activities difficult and increasing discomfort among residents. Following the thunderstorm and showers, the mercury fell to approximately 26°C, creating significantly cooler and more pleasant conditions.
The Nor’wester, a seasonal pre-monsoon weather phenomenon common in eastern India, arrived with strong winds and widespread rainfall on Saturday evening. The storm not only reduced temperatures but also helped lower humidity levels, improving overall comfort. Areas across Bhubaneswar experienced moderate to heavy rain, while strong winds provided additional cooling effects.
For several days before the storm, the city had been grappling with extreme heat. The heat index, which reflects how hot the weather feels when humidity is considered, had risen to nearly 50°C in some parts of the city. Such conditions had prompted concerns among health experts and civic authorities, particularly for children, senior citizens, and outdoor workers. After the rainfall, the heat index dropped sharply, bringing immediate relief.
Meteorologists explained that Nor’wester storms, locally known as Kalbaisakhi, play a crucial role during the pre-monsoon season. These storms typically develop due to atmospheric instability and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal. They often bring thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and sudden downpours, helping moderate temperatures before the arrival of the southwest monsoon.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that similar weather activity is likely to continue across several districts of Odisha in the coming days. Forecasts suggest the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds in many regions. As a result, temperatures are expected to remain relatively lower compared to the intense heat experienced earlier this month.
Experts believe that repeated Nor’wester activity this season has prevented prolonged heatwave conditions across Odisha. Frequent rainfall and cloud cover have helped keep daytime temperatures under control, reducing the severity of summer conditions in many districts.
While the cooler weather has been welcomed by residents, authorities have urged people to remain alert during thunderstorm periods. Lightning strikes and strong winds can pose risks, particularly in open areas. Citizens have been advised to follow official weather bulletins and take necessary precautions whenever warnings are issued.
For now, Bhubaneswar is enjoying a refreshing spell of weather after weeks of oppressive heat. With more rain and thunderstorm activity expected in the coming days, residents can look forward to continued relief as Odisha gradually moves closer to the onset of the monsoon season.
