Bhubaneswar sizzles at 41°C, heat index touches 50°C
Bhubaneswar, June 5: Residents of Bhubaneswar continued to endure intense heat and oppressive humidity on Friday as the city recorded a maximum temperature of 41°C by 2:30 PM. With humidity levels hovering around 38 per cent, the heat index pushed the “feels like” temperature to an alarming 50°C, making outdoor conditions extremely uncomfortable.
The combination of scorching temperatures and high humidity has increased the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses. Roads and public places witnessed thinner crowds during peak afternoon hours as many people chose to remain indoors or seek shelter from the harsh weather.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for several districts, warning residents to remain prepared and take necessary precautions. The alert will remain in force until Saturday morning. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph are likely at isolated places in Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Nabarangpur districts.
A Yellow Warning has also been issued for districts including Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Koraput, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh, where thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected during the afternoon or evening.
The IMD has also forecast warm night conditions in parts of western Odisha and continued hot and humid weather across several coastal and interior districts. Authorities have advised people to avoid direct exposure to the sun between noon and 4 PM, stay hydrated, and take extra care of children, senior citizens, and individuals with health concerns.
