FSSAI Mandates Official Vegan Logo on All Approved Vegan Food Products from July 2027

New Delhi, June 5: In a significant move aimed at improving food transparency and consumer awareness, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced that all approved vegan food products sold in the country must carry an official vegan logo on their packaging starting July 1, 2027. The decision comes as part of the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Amendment Regulations, 2026, recently notified by the country's apex food regulator.

The new regulation seeks to establish a uniform and recognizable labeling system for vegan products, making it easier for consumers to identify foods that meet prescribed vegan standards. The mandatory logo is expected to reduce confusion in the marketplace and strengthen confidence among consumers who choose plant-based diets for ethical, environmental, religious, or health-related reasons.

According to FSSAI, the official vegan logo will serve as a certification mark indicating that a product complies with all regulatory requirements related to vegan food production. Food business operators manufacturing, marketing, or importing vegan products will be required to display the designated logo prominently on product packaging.

The authority has provided a transition period of approximately one year to allow manufacturers and importers sufficient time to revise packaging designs and ensure compliance with the new rules. Products entering the market after July 1, 2027, will be expected to meet the updated labeling requirements.

Under existing regulations, vegan foods are defined as products that do not contain any ingredients, additives, flavorings, enzymes, or processing aids derived from animals. The regulations also require businesses to maintain strict measures to prevent contamination or mixing of vegan products with non-vegan ingredients during manufacturing, storage, transportation, and distribution.

The amendment will apply equally to imported vegan food products. Foreign manufacturers and importers seeking to market vegan foods in India must ensure that their products satisfy Indian regulatory standards and carry the prescribed vegan certification and labeling. This move is expected to create a level playing field for domestic and international producers while maintaining uniform standards across the sector.

Industry observers believe the decision reflects the growing popularity of vegan and plant-based food products in India. Rising consumer interest in sustainable food choices and increasing demand for dairy alternatives, plant-based beverages, meat substitutes, and vegan snacks have contributed to the expansion of the market in recent years.

Consumer rights groups have welcomed the initiative, stating that clear labeling will help buyers make informed purchasing decisions and prevent misleading claims. The introduction of a standardized logo is also expected to support regulatory enforcement by providing a visible marker of compliance.

FSSAI officials have emphasized that the measure is part of broader efforts to strengthen food labeling regulations and enhance transparency in the food industry. By introducing a mandatory vegan logo, the regulator aims to create greater trust in certified vegan products while encouraging manufacturers to adhere to established standards.

With the implementation date set for July 2027, food businesses across the country are expected to begin preparations to ensure a smooth transition to the new labeling regime, marking another step toward improved consumer information and accountability in India's food sector.
